Schultz Fire Fact Sheet
6/27/2010 07:00 Started: June 20 at approximately 11:00 at Schultz Tank and Elden Trail Cause: Investigators have determined that an abandoned campfire started the Schultz Fire. Forest Service officials request that anyone having information concerning the abandoned campfire be directed to the Coconino NF Supervisors' Office at (928) 527-3508. Location: North of Flagstaff, East of the San Francisco Peaks Size: approximately 15,075 acres Containment: 55% General Information: The Schultz Fire is under the management of Dugger Hughes's Southwest Interagency Incident Management Team. The Incident Command Post is located at Cromer Elementary School off of Silver Saddle Road. The fire is located approximately four miles north of Flagstaff, AZ, and is burning on lands administered by the Coconino National Forest including portions of the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. Closures/Advisories/Evacuations: An emergency fire closure restricting travel on lands, roads and trails within the vicinity of the San Francisco Peaks remains in effect. Recreationists are reminded to stay out of the closure area since this closure is being strictly enforced. The fire is still actively burning on the south, west and north flanks. Travelers are advised there may be increased traffic this weekend on Highway 89 and on access roads due to fire vehicles in the area. Smoking and campfire restrictions are in effect on the Coconino, Kaibab and Prescott National Forests. Visit the Coconino NF for more information at http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/ Yesterday's Activity: Crews continued to hold and improve existing line, conduct mop-up activities, and mitigate hazard trees. Line has been constructed completely around the fire. Crews began rehabilitation of line on the west, central part of the fire by installing water bars. Rehabilitation of dozer line began on the south end of the fire. Crews began an extensive hose lay on the southwest corner of the fire. The fire had only slight growth in size; no burnouts were conducted. Today's Planned Activity: Firefighters will continue improving line, holding line, patrolling line, conducting mop-up activities, and mitigating hazard trees. Rehabilitation of dozer lines on the south end of the fire, and work on the hose lay on the southeast corner will continue. Rehabilitation of line with water bars on the west side of the fire is expected to be completed by the end of shift. Repairs on a road to Locket Meadow will begin. Helicopters will available to support ground crews as needed. The area of greatest concern is on the southwest central portion of the fire; there is still a lot of heat in this area. Hotshots battle on familiar wildfire turf
http://www.usatoday.com/weather/wild...wildfire_N.htm By Oren Dorell, USA TODAY Duane Morris, leader of an elite crew of Flagstaff-area firefighters, had high hopes that his team's hometown familiarity with the mountainous terrain being charred by a 15,000-acre wildfire would be a valuable weapon against the blaze. Morris is the squad boss of the Flagstaff Hotshots, one of several firefighting crews working non-stop to contain the Schultz Fire, which ignited from an abandoned campfire June 20. The fire was officially 55% contained as of Sunday but is likely to burn for at least another week. "The area where the fire is burning, guys on the crew hunt in this area. We ride mountain bike trails all summer long when we're not working, and now we're hiking them in to fight the fire," Morris said. http://feeds.feedburner.com/%7Er/Usa...E4/OSo9saNQO6o Photos and map at the LINK above... |
